Cosford Air Museum
Maurice organised a run to the RAF Air Museum at Cosford.
Wednesday started with grey skies and no promise of improvement from the weather
forecasters. A few of us set off from Berkswell and had a good ride to
Chaddesly Corbett where we stopped for coffee at Rowberry's Garden
Centre.. With impeccable timing Keith L drew into the car park just as we
got off our bikes and Chris W arrived a few minutes later as we were sitting
down with our drinks.
The rain started as we left the coffee stop and fortunately it was only light
with the road initially only damp in places. The last few miles the rain
came heavier so it was good to arrive at The Crown at Allbrighton where we found
Mick P and Martin F waiting for us in the car park. With nine of us
sitting at our reserved table there was plenty to talk about while we waited for
out meals. The conversations, as always, were varied with aircraft,
racing, army experiences, machine problems and recent meals with vegetables
fresh from the allotment garden all being on the agenda. The meals of
generous proportions finished, we moved a couple of miles down the road to the
Air Museum. This is a magnificent establishment with free entry and a
tremendous array of aircraft to study. A new hanger housing
the "Cold War" exhibits has opened since the last VOC club run to
Cosford. In this new hanger you can stand under the huge expanse of
the Avro Vulcan "V" bomber wing with the Handley Page Victor and
Vickers Valiant counterparts in close proximity. A most impressive sight.
Amongst the other exhibits was an English Electric Lightning hanging
vertically. The "party piece" of the Lightning was to fly
horizontally and then execute a 90 degree turn to go straight up like a missile
with a thunderous roar from two RR Avon jet engines on re-heat!
Thanks to Maurice for organising the run and to everyone that attended to make
this a memorable day out. Eddy
