There was an
extremely good turnout for the run this year.
When I arrived at the site of the old Norton factory in
Bracebridge Street
,
Birmingham
start there were already hundreds of bikes parked up.
I walked between the lines of classic and modern bikes and found Coventry
VOC members Chris C, Dave S, and Rod G at the front where the organiser of the
run, John Price, was preparing to give his briefing.
While we waited for everyone to gather round he gave a brief history of
Norton at the
Bracebridge Street
site. The industrial history of
Birmingham
is his pet subject and John has agreed to come along to a club night later in
the year to give us a proper talk. John
also did a live on air Radio WM interview on his mobile while we waited and he
got us all to give a resounding cheer so that listeners could hear how many
people were there.
The run to the church
in Tanworth in Arden
took around half an hour and there was good parking in the nearby school yard.
There was a service in the church where Pauline, Mike’s widow
and her grandson were in attendance. John
Peters and Ken Sprayson took the lectern to tell us about Mike and some of their
memories of him. After the service
the congregation moved outside to Mike’s grave where a dedication was given
and Pauline thanked everyone for attending.
I “bumped into”
another Coventry section member in the church, Geoff N so the Coventry
section was very well represented at this event that remembers Mike Hailwood,
arguably our finest ever motor cycle road racer.
Thanks
to Chris who sent me the pictures below
