October Update

We've not had an update to the "Happenings" for a while so here is one for October.

The Navigation Trial wasn't well supported.  The weather forecast was for rain and the weathermen got it right.  I went to the start on my Rapide where I was joined by two more Vincent's riders who were competing in the trial, Dave Style and Dave Davies. Dave Davies had his eldest daughter on the pillion.  Disappointing turn out but that is how it goes. It is called a Vincent Owners Club not a Vincent Riders Club. ( Sorry, tongue firmly in cheek.)
The two Vincent's arrived at the lunch stop with tales of dissolving maps and gloves capable of soaking up 10 times their own weight in water. Always looking for the positive we did have nine people sitting down to lunch.  It was very sociable and the two Dave's showed great willpower to leave the warm, dry, dining area and set off for the short afternoon stint.  The weather picked up in the afternoon and just to show how contrary our weather is Gloria and I rode to Whitemoors Tea Rooms in Shenton in beautiful sunshine. This was the the final tea stop where we had another sociable session chatting and drinking tea. Anne and Chris Chant joined us and it was good to see Chris out and about and starting to do a few things. He is still not yet fully fighting fit but getting there.
The final ignominious blow to the event was that water from early rain draining off the fields caused a flash flood in Shenton.  This flooded the road and the two Dave's were the wrong side of the flooded road only 100 yards away from the tea rooms. We could hear their bikes but they couldn't get round the corner to complete the last bit. Dave Davies had a go at getting through but his engine drowned.  A dashing Dave Style waded in to help pull him back out!  It sounds like a script for an R.N.L.I. feature.  All this was happening just out of our site as we stood in nice warm sunshine listening for more engine noises.
Better weather earlier might have meant a few more taking part but all in all I had a good day as I'd had a ride on my bike and a chat and laugh with friends.

The AGM had a good turn out and the committee was re-elected.   There are no momentous changes to report.  George put on his treasurer's hat and explained that we were still solvent.  I say put George in at number 11 Downing street and we all might be more solvent.  At the AGM the two Dave's who took part in the Navigation Trial both got an award.  They deserved a medal for just turning up.  (Swimming lessons or a diving suit might be more appropriate considering the conditions they started out in. )

The section supported the October 11th VMCC Autumn run starting from Kenilworth Rugby club.  It was an excellent run with three Vincent's taking part.  Alan Britain rode his side valve Sunbeam.  Barry  came to the start on his Cotton before going home to change to his Scott.  The finish was at Long Itchington where all the bikes made a fine sight lined up in the pub car park.  (Many thanks to Tony Harris for the photograph's.  That is his trusty Ariel you can just see in the first picture.)

The club night on the 17th was a "Bits in the Bag Night".  There was much fumbling and some very educated guessing.  Some of the contestants really know their Vincent parts.  The standard was high with four people getting over 75% correct.  Martin Fox came out on top with an amazing show of knowledge and a score of 36 marks out of 40.

At Berkswell on October 24th the local Arts Society will have their usual annual picture display in the hall.  This doesn't affect our meeting and the kitchen and usual side room will be open.  You might even see a picture you like.

Coming up at Berkswell in November we have "The Gunpowder Plot" Party on the 7th and a "Darts Night" on the 21st.  The section supported the Classic Car Show at the NEC last year and volunteers are needed to staff the stand this year.  This was very good last year and a good opportunity to show a different audience what we are about.
